Navoiyazot and CASALE Sign Contract for Secondary N₂O Abatement Catalyst at Nitric Acid Plant in Navoiy

Last week, Navoiyazot JSC signed a supply and implementation contract with CASALE SA for the engineering, delivery, installation, start-up and performance support of a secondary nitrous oxide (N₂O) abatement catalyst system at Navoiyazot’s nitric acid plant in Uzbekistan.

This contract follows a Grant Agreement between Navoiyazot and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, under which GIZ supports the procurement and installation of the secondary abatement technology. The project is funded by the German Government and implemented under the Nitric Acid Climate Action Group (NACAG) initiative. NACAG works worldwide to abate N₂O emissions from nitric acid plants, cooperating with partner countries to promote sustainable industrial development and contribute to global climate goals.

The secondary catalyst system will be installed directly in the nitric acid plant’s reactor section and is designed to significantly reduce N₂O formation during the oxidation process. Once operational, the technology will enable substantial cuts in process-related greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining plant throughput and product quality. The project scope includes engineering and supply of the catalyst and necessary internals, integration with existing plant systems, commissioning support, as well as training for Navoiyazot’s operating personnel.

With this step, Navoiyazot contributes to Uzbekistan’s climate objectives and underlines the practical impact of international collaboration in industrial emissions mitigation. NACAG and GIZ will continue to accompany the project throughout installation, start-up and the subsequent monitoring.

Following contract signature, project execution will commence with detailed engineering and procurement, followed by onsite installation and commissioning. The plant will implement continuous monitoring and reporting to verify the emission reduction outcomes in line with NACAG standards.

Around this time, the NACAG Secretariat visited the facility in Navoiy to have a look for themselves where the abatement and later on CEMS (continuous N₂O emissions monitoring system) will be installed (picture above).
