Argentina formally joins NACAG

In August 2018, Argentina formally joined the Nitric Acid Climate Action Group by signing the initiative’s Declaration.

Against this background, in December 2018 the NACAG Secretariat visited all three nitric acid production facilities located in Argentina. Accompanied by a representative of the Sustainable Development Unit of the Ministry of Production, the NACAG Secretariat conducted a first assessment of the technical feasibility of implementing N2O mitigation technology in the plants.

The initiative was met with great interest from representatives of all visited industrial plants. In case all nitric acid production sites in Argentina will be equipped with mitigation technology, around 250,000 tons CO2-equvalent can be abated every year.

Furthermore, the NACAG Secretariat participated in the First Congress for Sustainable Productive Development which took place in Buenos Aires on December 11 and was organized by the Ministry of Industry. The event created a discussion forum with different stakeholders from the private and public sector. Topics covered included the effects of the chemical industry on climate change, improvement of recycling processes and circular economy. The NACAG Secretariat held the opening talk for a section on multilateral cooperation in the environmental context.
