Landmark First Abatement Project – Half a Year Review

The Director of NACAG visitsIndorama Rustavi Azot to mark a milestone: the first successfully implemented greenhouse gas abatement project under the NACAG programme.

NACAG Programme Director, Torsten Brezina, welcomed by Rustavi Azot’s General Director, Mr. Jay Jajoo, visited Rustavi Azot, an Indorama Group nitrogen fertiliser production plant in Rustavi, Georgia that holds the distinction of being the first facility to complete the N2O abatement journey under the NACAG framework.

The visit brought together senior representatives from both organisations, including the Head of Indorama Caucasus, the parent company of Rustavi Azot, underlining the collaborative partnership that made the project possible.

During the visit, the delegation toured the abatement installations at the Rustavi site and reviewed operational data documenting the emissions reductions achieved since the project became operational. The results confirm that the technology has been successfully integrated into the plant’s existing production processes, with nitrous oxide (N₂O) destruction rates meeting high standards.

During the visit, the significance of Rustavi Azot’s achievement for the wider region was highlighted. Completing the first project is more than a technical milestone, it demonstrates that robust, verified climate action is achievable in the nitric acid sector across the Caucasus and Central Asia, and sets a clear precedent for the facilities that follow worldwide. Moreover, it demonstrates how cost efficient N2O is in comparison to other CO2e abatement measures. Especially outstanding is that NACAG’s investment into N2O abatement triggered Rustavu Azot’s investment into additional NOx abatement measures with their own financial resources.

The Head of Indorama Caucasus and CEO of Indorama Rustavi Azot welcomed the visit and expressed the company’s commitment to continuing the efforts beyond the partnership with NACAG. The successful implementation at Rustavi Azot reflects both the technical capability of the plant’s teams and the value of the support and guidance provided throughout the process.

The Nitric Acid Climate Action Group works with nitric acid producers across the world to reduce N₂O emissions, one of the most potent greenhouse gases generated in industrial production. Rustavi Azot’s position as the programme’s first success story is expected to serve as both a model and motivation for other participating facilities as they progress through their own implementation processes of which some are soon to be completed.
